Universal areas

Leeds chose 9 universal areas, each one lined up with the Teachers' Standards. Your council will have your own, because they come out of your co-produced ordinarily available provision document.

  • outcomes
  • leadership
  • assessment and early identification
  • curriculum and high quality teaching
  • environment
  • pastoral, behaviour and relationships
  • preparing for tomorrow
  • voice of the child and family
  • staff skills and training

An expectation on every page

Each page starts with one expectation. For example, Leeds has "Our leaders can demonstrate that learners with SEND make good or outstanding progress, relative to their starting points."

Under it sit the best practice recommendations your specialist teams wrote, and under those the resources they curated, each marked free or paid and by key stage. In Leeds that is over 750 resources, and growing. A PDF is out of date the day it is printed. A web page can take this week's new guidance and evidence.

The 4 areas of need, in depth

Under communication and interaction in Leeds sit speech, language and communication, and social communication differences including autism. Under cognition and learning sit reading, writing, maths and executive functioning. Each one is a page of expectations, with the tested interventions beside them to support individual learners.

Strategies that work

This is where the SENCO and the class teacher sit down together. They choose the strategy most likely to help their learners, and the evidence for it is on the same page while they talk.
