The Hero image

What is it trying to say?

Hero banner from a Local Offer "About SEND and the Local Offer" page, showing a smiling girl giving two thumbs up alongside the Lambeth SEND Local Offer logo

How will we write the Alt Text?

Here are the questions we need to ask:

1. Is the image purely decorative?

YES - Alt = ""

NO -

2. Does the surrounding text describe the image?

YES - Alt = ""

NO -

3. Does the image have a title?

YES - Alt = ""

NO -

4. Is the image a link?

NO - Alt = "A smiling girl with Down's syndrome doing a double thumbs-up"

I hope that this brings a measure of the feeling of the image.

I have chosen not to include a reference to the missing teeth, the likely age of the girl, or her hair. To my mind, they wouldn't add anything, and Alt Text should be as brief as possible.

Note

We don't need to write "Picture of...", "Image of..." at the start of Alt Text. Screen readers will announce that it is an image, so anything more would be repetitive.
